For all those who have lost a faithful friend…

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this-the last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad I understand, but do not
let grief then stay your hand, for on this
day, more than the rest, your love and friendship must stand the test. We have had so many happy years, you would not want me to suffer so, when the time comes,

Please, let me go.

Take me to where my needs they’ll tend, only, stay with me till the end and hold me firm and speak to me until my eyes no longer see. I know in time you will agree, it is a kindness you do to me. Although my tail its last has waved, from pain and suffering I have been saved. Don’t grieve that it must be you who must decide this thing to do; We’ve been so close we two----these years, don’t let your heart hold any tears.

  1. I love this one.

I never understood how someone can not be with their dog when the 'time comes'. If you think it's hard for you, imagine how your dog feels surrounded by strangers. That his/her last vision is someone he doesn't know.

    Thank you for sharing.

  2. It is with great pride that I can say that I was there at the end for every last one of my pets, no matter the pain to me. Out of deepest respect for the friendship they gave me, I stayed by thier side. Out of fiercest love, I whispered the last words they ever heard. I was there when they came into my life, I will damn well be there when they leave it.

  3. Anna nailed it perfectly! Thanks for sharing! It's never easy, but think of all the good times your dog(s) has shared with you. They retired with a warm bed, great food, unconditional love, and endless snuggles! Be Calm and carry on!
