Liberty: Safe In Foster Care And On The Road To Recovery!

Take Me Home is pleased to share that we moved Liberty into her new foster home! She now knows the security of a stable home environment and the love and compassion of a wonderful foster mom.

In the past week since her rescue, Liberty has made critical strides in her medical condition; showing our veterinarian over and over again that quality of life is not far from reach for this young girl; that she will soon be able to live in a world with no pain or suffering. After one week of antibiotic treatment and proper care, Liberty’s vaginal hyperplasia has drastically improved and she is expected to make a full recovery from this condition following her spay surgery. The tumor on her nose that may have proven impossible to remove due to its large size and the fact that it is located on the center of her face, is beginning to respond to the injections she was given to shrink its size; and we are hopeful that it will be completely removed, along with the tumor on her leg, at the same time she is spayed. Liberty’s blood work also came back with very positive results, with the exception of an extremely low thyroid, which is completely treatable with daily medication. Her low thyroid explains her hair loss and dull coat, both of which will improve drastically now that she is getting the medication she needs.

As a rescue organization that takes responsibility for dogs with various medical ailments, we must always be consciences of the amount of medical procedures we can humanely ask a dog to endure; while taking into account whether or not those procedures will result in quality of life and the ability to place that dog into a loving home. And although it is simply inexcusable that Liberty’s owners allowed her to deteriorate to this degree, we are thankful that she made her way to us while she is still young, while her ailments are still treatable, and while we still have the opportunity to provide her with a happy, healthy life. Liberty celebrated leaving our vet's office with some of her new friends and TMH supporters, who brought care packages and saw her off to her new foster home.

Liberty’s surgery is scheduled on May 10 at which time we will take the next critical step in liberating her from her neglectful past. In the meantime, this once defeated and forgotten girl is already wagging her tail and giving licks of gratitude as she enjoys the comforts of the first real home she has ever known. So, from everyone on our team, we send our heartfelt gratitude and thanks to all who have made it possible to answer Liberty’s desperate plea: “Take Me Home!"

Liberty, Tragically Neglected Boxer Needs Your Support!

Alone. Scared. Defeated. Forgotten. Animal rescue groups such as Take Me Home must grow accustomed to the many words that describe animal cruelty and neglect. We live in a world where millions of innocent animals suffer at the hands of humans on a daily basis. But despite the commonality of these reports, it was nothing short of tragic when Take Me Home volunteers received a desperate plea from a Samaritan who had come across a dog in horrifying conditions. Meet Liberty; a three year old Boxer that defines the very principal after which she was named; a dog whose life could not be more worthy of saving. This sweet, innocent girl is a living, breathing example of why we must continue to fight for the liberty of every neglected animal; and continue to bring justice to those who allow these animals to suffer in silence.

Liberty was discovered by a Samaritan who visited a friends’ parents’ home and became extremely concerned when she looked outside and noticed a young Boxer crouched down in the dirt of a filthy yard; a Boxer that appeared to be reluctant to move and in obvious distress. When the Samaritan approached the dog, the first thing she noticed was an extremely large tumor across the dog’s nose. As she began to pet the dog we now know as Liberty, and as Liberty still refused to get up and move, the Samaritan knew something was very wrong. Desperate to determine if Liberty could even walk, she lifted her up and discovered to her horror that Liberty’s female organs were protruding from her backend, and that she had obviously been left in this condition for quite some time, as her organs had begun to petrify and were covered in dirt and filth. Further, Liberty was notably underweight and covered in various large tumors and hair loss.

Horrified to discover this family could allow their own dog to deteriorate to such an extreme degree, and desperate to get Liberty emergency medical attention as she suffered a slow death in her own backyard, the Samaritan pleaded with the family to release the dog to her; and sent a desperate plea to the rescue community for help.

Liberty’s family was reluctant to release her, but the Samaritan educated Liberty’s family on the severe consequences of holding an animal hostage in their yard and depriving her of critical medical attention, and they finally conceded. Within 24 hours of receiving her shocking story, Take Me Home volunteers took custody of Liberty and she was immediately checked into a veterinary hospital. Liberty has been diagnosed with vaginal hyperplasia -- which much to our horror, has been untreated for at least three months -- and will require surgical repair. It has also been confirmed that the large mass on Liberty’s nose is a cancerous tumor which will require extensive, delicate surgery to her face, to ensure that the cancer does not spread.

In addition to her vaginal hyperplasia, the extremely large, cancerous tumor on Liberty’s nose is accompanied by many other tumors throughout her body. It is heart wrenching enough to imagine any animal suffering through the pain and neglect that Liberty has endured; but to meet her and experience her gentle nature, her love of people, and her kindness to children and other animals; it is enough to reduce even the strongest of human beings to tears.

Take Me Home is committed to showing Liberty a life without pain or having cancerous tumors slowly take her life; a life without having to sleep alone in the freezing cold; a life without having to lay in filth and dirt; a life where gentle souls like hers are cherished and provided the care and compassion they deserve. Liberty is currently safe at our veterinarian’s office where she is receiving medical care while she awaits the critical surgeries that she so desperately needs. Every person who has met Liberty since this monumental rescue has commented on what a soulful, sweet, innocent and forgiving dog she is. Liberty will be moved to foster care as soon as her health issues are stabilized. Liberty’s ailments, although treatable, are many and costly; but as with every dog we take into our custody, we have promised to provide her with whatever it takes to restore her health and happiness. However, we cannot fulfill that promise without your continued support.
