Dear Cherished Take Me Home Families, Friends and Supporters:
As folks across the country gear up to celebrate the Fourth of July and continue to enjoy the dog days of summer, we want to remind you that this is not a celebratory time of year for everyone. Fourth of July fireworks are very scary for dogs. We have all heard and/or experienced horror stories of dogs breaking free from their backyards, jumping off balconies (some still tied to a post for support with a leash on!) or hiding under beds or in other dangerous areas; all in an attempt to run, hide and block out the frightening noises around them. Shelters across the nation also feel the downside to this time of year because after we are done celebrating, they are trying to figure out how to deal with the onslaught of strays and family pets who have run away from their homes – some never to be reunited with their families again!
Here are some good tips to follow on the Fourth of July weekend and throughout the year:
· Keep your dog inside if you have to leave on the Fourth of July. Do not keep your dog in the yard alone. Keep him or her in a smaller, safer area in the house with the lights and TV or radio on.
· If you bring your dog to a party, keep him or her on a tight leash with you as the handler.
· NEVER leave your dog tied to or alone on a balcony – this is true for ALL year long!
· NEVER leave your dog in a car unattended – this is true for ALL year long too!
· Always make sure your dog has his or her collar and identification tags on – whether your dog is with you or not.
The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate and have fun. It is also a time to remember the needs of our four legged family members. Following the aforementioned tips on this special weekend and all year long ensures a safe and happy time for everyone – humans and pets!
We wish you a safe and happy Fourth of July and summer!
