Take Me Home Family Mourns Death of Family Member, Courage

The Take Me Home family is sad to announce that our beloved Courage passed away this past Thursday. Rescued from a shelter in early March, Courage was first suspected of being poisoned. With his brother already deceased at the shelter and his remains already gone, the shelter's veterinarian was unable to conduct autopsy to determine the cause of death. Courage displayed similar symptoms as his deceased brother. Upon receiving the news of Courage, Take Me Home leaped into action and rescued him from the shelter.

Courage was immediately taken to an amazing veterinary hospital where he was given the best medical treatments and care. Leegie from Take Me Home opened her heart and her door and welcomed Courage into her family. Every day, Courage struggled with mobility. It was difficult for him to use and control his front legs. He had involuntary movements and trouble with balance. Although he faced endless challenges, he was always eager to play with his foster siblings. His spirit high and his heart tender, he greeted everyone (kids, adults and dogs) with kisses of love. In fact, Courage was the first one to greet visitors.

Sadly, our neurologist confirmed that Courage had severe damage to his breathing passageway due to paralysis. Courage was suffering. Although no firm cause could be confirmed, it is suspected that his condition may have been genetic and there may very well be a breeder out there in Los Angeles breeding Boxers with this condition.

On April 1, 2010, Take Me Home bid tearful farewell to Courage. He was surrounded by the love of our TMH volunteer team as he closed his eyes for the very last time.

Take Me Home volunteers and supporters are in mourning. Hearts are broken and tears have been shed, but now is the time to pull together our strength and courage to keep fighting the good fight for animals with no voice. Our beloved Courage and his brother have infused our passion to educate the public about irresponsible breeders and peel away false stigma of shelter animals. Please join our rescue family as we honor their legacy and continue our work to change the lives of orphaned animals and to end animal overpopulation. Together we will continue to spread our message that every minute of everyday a helpless animal is put to death just because no one was there to take them home. By all of us sharing Courage's heart breaking story, we are taking a step in the right direction to stop needless suffering of animals.

  1. May courage rest in peace. I wish all the people who were there for him all the strength they need. Hugs from Marla de Vries (the Netherlands)
